WHAT IS IMAGE-GUIDED SURGERY?
Image guided sinus surgery (IGS) has been employed since
the mid-1990s. This new technique relies on a powerful computer
system to help the surgeon precisely localize a surgical
site, to plan each step of the procedure via a 3D model
on the computer screen, and to calculate the ideal access
to the surgical site before the operation. The surgical
site and its surroundings can be viewed from different angles
and in relation to landmark structures like the sinus cavities
or the skull. During the operating procedure, the physician
can track, on a monitor, the movement of his or her instruments
inside your body with a precision of 1-2 millimeters and
can avoid damage to healthy tissue and to critical areas
as much as possible.
